Renewable Energy Systems (RES) is proposing to build 15 turbines at Cairn Duhie, within the Glenferness Estate, just a few miles from Lochindorb and its castle ““ once a stronghold for the infamous Wolf of Badenoch.
The castle dates from at least the start of the 14th Century and stands on a natural island midway along the loch.
The proposed generation capacity of the wind farm will be up to 35 megawatts, meaning it should generate electricity equivalent to the average annual demand of around 15,000 Scottish households.
The wind farm site lies entirely within the Highland Council area, and its eastern and southern boundaries coincide with the Moray border.
Cairn Duhie wind farm will deliver important environmental benefits, according to RES, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sir Robert McAlpine, a British family-owned construction firm with a history in Scotland stretching from the Glenfinnan Viaduct to Hampden Park football ground.
They claim this could mean a reduction of around 51,000 to 75,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in the first year of operation, as well as substantial saving in emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulphur.
The ‘bowl’-like nature of the surrounding geography allows screening from medium and long distances, RES claim.
