Wind industry to benefit from Canadian initiative

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced the Canadian federal government’s support for the development of 4,000 MW of renewable energy capacity under its new ecoEnergy Renewable Power Initiative.

According to a statement released by the Canadian Wind Energy Association, the initiative will provide eligible wind energy projects with a production incentive payment of C$0.1 per kWh in their first 10 years of operation, which amounts to a distribution of $1.5 billion to renewable energy projects over a 14-year period.

“CanWEA commends the federal government for launching this new program, as it will provide a solid and stable policy foundation through 2010 for the continued rapid expansion of the wind energy industry in Canada,” says CanWEA President Robert Hornung.
