Wind power needs regulation
We read the wind turbine story in Saturday’s paper. The New Bedford Standard Times has been pro-wind power in most of its articles. We agree that alternative energy sources need to be researched .
Residential and commercial wind turbines can be productive. The town of Mattapoisett is attempting to place a commercial wind turbine in a residentially zoned town owned 35 acre wetland in the midst of over 200 residential homes. The area is located on Brandt Island Road.
We have been asking for a set of state regulations and town by-laws to control the installation of residential and commercial turbines. There was a large fire on the North Shore a few weeks ago in a residential neighborhood in which the news and government agencies all asked how a commercial business could be located in a residential area. The lack of state regulations and town by-laws and enforcement usually lead to tragedy. The state of Massachusetts, along with cities and towns, has got to look at the control of land- based wind turbines.
Cape Cod has established a 41 page set of by-laws that do a good job of control. These same by-laws should be established statewide.
