DOJ: no violations in law

A state Department of Justice investigation has found that Manitowoc County did not violate open meetings laws and the Mishicot town board had no potential conflicts of interest that warranted enforcement action relating to the county’s wind energy system ordinance, according to a letter dated Jan. 4, Manitowoc County Corporation Council Steve Rollins said Tuesday.

The letter was in response to allegations made by eight county residents, Rollins said.

The DOJ found:

* Manitowoc County had properly posted all meeting notices, but the county should post notices in at least three public locations. Rollins said meeting notices will be posted in four areas including the Manitowoc County Courthouse rotunda, the county office complex, the health care center, and the human services department.

* No evidence of any “secret meetings”

* No member of the public was misled by a clerical oversight that listed a “special” meeting as a “regular” meeting; and

* Recommended that the names of all committee members at a meeting be listed in the minutes of each meeting, although law does not require it unless a roll call vote is requested.
