No Vic Govt approval needed for Newfield wind farm

Plans for a wind farm near Newfield, east of Warrnambool, will not require State Government approval.

Acconia Energy wants to build 15 turbines near the town and the decision will now rest with Corangamite Council.

The Minister for Planning has determined the project is not environmentally sensitive.

But Acconia project manager Julian Gaschigard says the Federal Government still needs to decide if the wind farm has any cultural implications.

“We’ve sent all the surveys we did, the birds, bats, vegetation, culture heritage and based on that he will make a judgment [on] whether the project is a cultural action or not. A cultural action will mean more studies to be done and a longer process,” he said.
