Plans have been submitted to build 10 giant wind turbines on farmland.
Energy company E.ON UK has applied to Sedgefield Borough Council to build a £26m wind farm.
Experts say it would provide enough electricity for every home in Trimdon, Sedgefield and Fishburn. The farm would be built on Butterwick Moor, north of the A689 and east of Sedgefield. If approved, the development would see 10 turbines built on the site, along with access tracks and a control building. It would be built next door to the already-approved Walkway Wind Farm which will see seven turbines constructed. Project developer Alex Fornal said the 110m-tall turbines could stop 44,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere every year which is the equivalent of taking 13,000 cars off the road. “We obviously believe this is a great site for a wind farm, especially as it’s next door to an already consented wind farm and we are hopeful that the council will agree with us,” he said. “It’s certainly worth pointing out that this scheme alone would be able to produce around a third of the 2010 green generation targets for County Durham. “In addition, it could produce enough electricity for all the homes in Fishburn, Trimdon and Sedgefield twice over.” E.ON has said that it will invest £625,000 into the local community if the application is successful. The Mail reported recently how the company had also submitted a planning application to District of Easington council to build five wind turbines on farmland near Haswell Moor. The £12.5m development could generate enough energy to supply 7,000 homes in the district.
