FPL Energy announced plans to submit a proposal for a large wind farm in Cavalier County, North Dakota.
The proposal was mentioned in Gov. John Hoeven’s address to the state legislature Wednesday, the Grand Forks Herald reported. The application will be for a 160 megawatt wind farm, according to the North Dakota Public Service Commission.
For more than a year, FPL, a subsidiary of Florida Power and Light, has had Cavalier in mind as a site. Data was collected over the course of a year on wind in the area using a monitoring tower near Nekoma, N.D. It was built by Cavalier County Job Development Authority in collaboration with the Grand Forks EAPC Architects Engineers.
According to Carol Goodman, director of CCJDA, landowners and utility representatives met to discuss the deal last fall. Minnkota Power Cooperative was mentioned as a possible buyer for the energy that would be generated.
FPL already has three wind farms in operation in North Dakota. In Edgely and Wilton, electricity is generated for Basin Electric and in Kulm, power is generated for Otter Tail Power Company.
The utility is in the construction phase of an additional 50 megawatt farm in Oliver County.
FPL also has wind farms in surrounding states like Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Iowa.
