Waldo County School District Looks To Use Wind Power

A school district in Waldo County is looking to become the first district in the state to use wind power. SAD 3 is teaming up with Unity College and Coastal Enterprises Institute exploring whether there is enough wind to put an industrial scale wind turbine near Mount View High School.

For the next three months they’ll be measuring wind speed and direction at a nearby farm in Knox. Coastal Enterprises is putting sensors partway up on an existing windmill. SAD 3 is hoping to save money while taking advantage of a natural source of renewable energy.

“The disappointment when somebody was planning on going into a community and all of the sudden they are not going to be there so, for purposes of good business practice we need to keep that information to ourselves until we are ready to announce it,” said Kevin Kane of the Widewaters Group.

The revised plan is smaller is in size and more consolidated, moving it further away from the wetland areas. Development officials say if they get support from the city and state, the deal would be finalized in March or April.
