Residents near Butterwick Moor are protesting a bid by E.ON UK to build a wind farm there, the Northern Echo reported.
The community formed an action group called Sedgefield and Wynyard Against Turbines. They are encouraging their neighbors to write formal objections to the borough council in an effort to get the bid rejected.
“We are just ordinary people who enjoy living in the countryside and don’t want to see it being spoiled,” a SWAT spokesperson said. “We just don’t think this place is right for them.”
The $55 million proposed project would consist of 10, 360 foot turbines built alongside an already approved seven turbine farm at High Swainston Farm.
“We obviously believe this is a great site for a wind farm,” said Alex Fornal, E.ON UK project developer. “It’s certainly worth pointing out that this scheme alone would be able to produce around a third of the 2010 green generation targets for the County Durham and enough electricity for all the homes in Fishburn, Trimdon and Sedgefield twice over.”
Opponents still argue despite the siting issues that the rate of efficiency isn’t worth paving their fields.
“Turbines placed offshore are proven to be much more efficient than those inland,” a SWAT member said.
The Sedgefield Borough Council is not expected to finalize any decisions for several months.
