Nine Canyon Expansion Project Funded

Work is moving forward on the project to expand the Nine Canyon Wind Project just south of Kennewick.

Energy Northwest has issued about $69 million in bonds to fund the project’s third and final stage.

The bonds were sold at an interest rate just below the industry average.

The project will expand the number of turbines from 49 to 63.

The increase means the project will be able to pump another 32 megawatts into the area grid.

“The percentage increase in power output is much more than the percentage increase in the number of turbines, and what that reflects is advances in the technology, and they’re bigger,” said Brad Peck, an Energy Northwest spokesperson.

New generation from the project will go to six local utility districts.

Franklin county PUD will get a quarter of it.

Benton PUD gets about 19% of the new power.
