The school district will work with Empire State Wind Energy to assess the possibility of building a wind turbine on school property, provided the Oneida company pays any costs involved.
The school board unanimously voted last night to send the company a letter stating its support for a feasibility study. The village also backs the study, said Trustee Kurt Werts, who attended the school board meeting and “heartily recommended” that it send the letter.
Wind power proponents say turbines can provide cheap and reliable energy.
Backed by Tom Golisano, the billionaire founder of Paychex, Empire State has in recent months been investigating wind power possibilities in eastern Wayne County. CEO Keith Pitman, who spoke at Tuesday’s village board meeting, has said the company plans to assume the financial risk of building turbines and return much of its profits to local communities.
“They’re willing to go out on a limb and do the research,” school board member Thomas Ledbetter said last night.
Although not ideal for large-scale wind farms, Pitman said Tuesday that some parts of the village have enough wind to support smaller-scale projects, such as individual turbines.
