Southgate Council has received a proposal to install a weather test tower, as a first step toward a possible wind farm.
This was proposed to council by John Pennie of Windrush Energy, and Derek Tennant of Flesherton Wind Energy in the hopes of finding a suitable wind farm location.
Tennant says this tower will be at a site in former Proton township to determine if or where a suitable site for a wind farm may exist.
He says the tower would test weather conditions for about a year.
Tennant says if this is a suitable site, and approval is given for a wind farm, four to six wind turbines could be built.
He says the power generated by this wind farm would be about ten megawatts, or enough to power approximately 3-thousand homes.
He adds the cost of this project could reach about 22-million dollars, with a cost of about 90-thousand for the test tower.
Tennant says the pros of having wind power greatly outweigh the cons.
He says wind power is put into the main power grid, as is nuclear power, coal power and other sources.
Tennant says the more wind power is produced, the less fuel is required at nuclear plants and coal plants, which helps take away wastes and pollutants.
He adds Europe’s power is about 20 per cent derived from wind power, compared to only 1% in Ontario, which he feels should be increased to reduce wastes and pollutants.
