Planning changes allow Scone to consider wind farms

The New South Wales Government has paved the way for the consideration of alternative energy projects such as wind farms in the Scone area.

The Government has approved changes to the town’s local environment plan (LEP) and the Upper Hunter Council says monitoring of the weather around Scone has shown it would be suitable for a wind farm style development.

General manager Daryl Dutton says the council is aware of at least one application to be lodged soon, and has welcomed the changes to the environment plan.

“Anybody that wanted to establish a wind farm or a solar power generation plant within the former Scone Shire under the old LEP, couldn’t do so,” he said.

“This current amendment to that LEP allows that to happen.

“So I think if you have a look at what’s happening with the coal industry and the push towards environmentally friendly methods of generating power, we will see more and more of these across the nation.”
