Community signs up for Lewis wind farm

A deal was signed yesterday to create the UK’s largest community wind farm on Lewis.

If approved by the Scottish Executive, it would see six 3MW turbines, capable of generating electricity for 13,000 homes, owned by a community trust.

The agreement has been signed by the Western Isles Council, developers Beinn Mhor Power and the Muaitheabhal Community Windfarm Trust.

The community wind farm will be built adjacent to Beinn Mhor’s planned 47-turbine wind farm at Eishken on Lewis. In addition to helping the creation of the community wind farm, the firm will pay 1.5 per cent of its revenue from the Muaitheabhal development into community trusts over the scheme’s 25-year life.

Alasdair Morrison, the islands’ MSP, said: “Our communities are well placed to benefit.”
