Wind farm plans 90 turbines by 2008

Cresson Township officials learned Thursday night just how big Allegheny Ridge Wind Farm LLC will become.

By 2008, 90 electricity-generating wind turbines will line a 13-mile stretch through the Mainline area and into Blair County.

Phase One of the windmill development already under construction is 40 turbines in the Allegheny Ridge Wind Farm LLC in Portage, Washington, Cresson, Greenfield and Juniata townships.

As that construction nears completion, work will begin on the second phase ““ 35 windmills called North Allegheny Wind Farm LLC, Terry Nichols, a representative of Gamesa USA, told officials.

That will put additional windmills in Portage, Washington and Cresson townships.

Work is tentatively set to begin in 2008 on the third phase, Allegheny Wind Expansion, which will add another 15 windmills in Cresson Township and surrounding areas, Nichols said.

“We’re doing wind testing now,” he said, adding that Gamesa still is unable to tell local officials how many turbines will be sited in Cresson Township, but promised more details in the spring. Spain-based Gamesa operates a manufacturing plant outside Ebensburg.

The supervisors told Nichols that, before they sign, they want to review a letter stating they have no problems with the sale of 100 percent of Gamesa’s interest in Allegheny Ridge Wind Farm to Babcock & Brown, of Australia, one of the world’s largest wind-generation investment companies.

The issue will be discussed at the Jan. 11 meeting, Supervisor Scott Decoskey said.

Babcock & Brown also may be funding the third phase of the wind-farm development.
