More turbines for Winscales

Plans for a seven-turbine windfarm near Workington have been submitted to Allerdale council.

Your Energy wants to build the 81-metre-high turbines at Winscales, next to an existing windfarm, on land between the A595 and A66.

The company said the new turbines will generate electricity for about 4,000 homes, which is around 10 per cent of Allerdale’s domestic electricity needs.

The application is not likely to be considered by planners until March at the earliest.

An exhibition of the proposals was held in October at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington, at which there were mixed reactions.

Matt Kelly, Your Energy’s project manager, said the area was suitable because it was next to an existing windfarm which has good wind speeds and low ecological impact.

He added that the company would use its profits to set up a fund, with at least £130,000 over the 25-year lifetime of the turbines, to fund local schemes involving energy efficiency.

But there has been concern about the impact of the extra turbines on the local environment and about the noise pollution.

The plans are available for public inspection at the town hall on Oxford Street.
