Wind farm plan meets opposition at council

At an emotionally charged meeting on Tuesday, South Molton Town Council planning committee agreed to recommend refusal for the Batsworthy Cross wind turbine planning application. As the Two Moors Campaign group applauded, the planning committee backed refusal on the grounds of a lack of cost effectiveness for the proposed efficiency of the turbines.

Cllr Martin Kingdon said: “Having considered the material submitted, I am against wind farms because of a lack of efficiency. They are hugely subsidised by Government and wind turbines on the North Cornwall coast are said to be only 24.1% efficient.”

Caroline Harvey, secretary of the Two Moors Campaign was delighted with the outcome.

She said: “We are so pleased with the decision. While we are in favour of renewable energy we object to giant onshore wind farms.

“There are only 40 buildings in London taller than the proposed turbines. The group believes onshore turbines are deflecting away from local solutions to renewable energy.

“As a rural community we think there should be rural solutions such as small scale biomass plants, this would also produce local jobs. And produce consistent power.”
