Equal split on wind farm submissions

A first count of submissions for a massive wind farm planned for Central Otago shows an exact split of opponents and supporters.

Meridian is planning to build a 176-turbine wind farm on the Lammermore Range, about an hour from Dunedin.

It will be one of the world’s largest.

Central Otago District Council has logged 529 submissions in support of the farm and the same number against it.

An opponent, Ewen Carr, believes the high numbers in support were because of a Meridian letterbox drop of a ready-made supporting submission.

He says the turbines will be seen up to 100km away.

Supporter Sue Elliot says debate is strong within the community. She farms on land that will house some of the turbines and says the 92 square kilometres of land that would be used is a tiny amount of the available land in the area.
