Letters, Vermont

A futuristic letter to a grandchild

Come, child, let us go and look at the giant wind turbines plastered all over our mountains – Vermont kindly lets the power they generate go to other states like Illinois.

And they didn’t even have to spend their own money to build these wonderful wind towers – the government supplied it, for alternate power generation. (You will have to learn that “government money” means yours and mine, money we pay in taxes.)

But come, let us go and watch the wind turbines slice up little birds. What fun for a Sunday afternoon!

We will have to be careful, though, where we walk or drive. The nice wind tower people block off roads and land where they put up these towers – in places where we used to be able to hike, hunt, and snowmobile.

They told us their towers would replace tourist attractions like covered bridges, but we don’t know why the tourists, disgusted, no longer come to visit.

But never mind. Look at the benefits. At night we don’t see stars anymore, but we do see the lights twinkling on top of these wind towers, 400 feet above the tree lines.

And now we don’t have to go to Disneyland. Because, child, Disneyland is the whole state covered with wind towers.

Yours truly,

Addison Merrick
