Wales is not windy enough for turbines to produce enough electricity, a new study has claimed.It suggests few wind farms in Wales and England produce as much electricity as the Government had forecast.
The news is bound to fuel campaigns against wind turbines in Wales because huge swathes of land, from Carmarthenshire to Neath and Port Talbot, have been earmarked by the Assembly for such developments.
The Government has set a target of producing a tenth of Britain’s energy via renewable sources by 2010, and 15 per cent by 2015.
But the Renewable Energy Foundation study has shown that Wales and England are just not windy enough to meet these targets.
Foundation adviser John Constable said: “It is quite clear that if wind farms are built anywhere on land south of the border, the targets will not be met.”
