Al Fayed wind farm site inspected

All 80 members of Highland Council are expected to visit the site of a proposed wind farm on land owned by businessman Mohamed Al Fayed.

It is a rare move for the entire council to embark on a site visit on a planning matter.

It has been estimated that the special meeting in Lairg, Sutherland, will cost several thousands of pounds in travel and overnight accommodation expenses.

The visit was prompted by objections to the application by local councillors.

The wind farm had been approved by the planning committee, but opponents wanted it discussed by the full council.

Mr Al Fayed is a major land owner in the Highlands. He owns Balnagown Estates and the Falls of Shin visitor centre in Sutherland.
