Windmill farm proposed for north Leamington

A wind project that residents opposed near Point Pelee National Park is now being considered for the north end of Leamington.

Advantis Energy is holding a meeting Tuesday to see where residents may support a wind project in a section of farmland southeast of Staples.

“Community members will have an option to pick a project site out of that area,” said Boris Vondrus of Advantis Energy.

He said contracts have been distributed to some landowners in the area but the company has not leased land.

Advantis Energy is proposing a 10- megawatt project with four towers. The turbines would be 65 to 85 metres high from the base to the hub. The project could cost between $16 million and $18 million.

Some residents at the last meeting were surprised to learn Vondrus is 17 years old. He said Advantis is a partnership of 10 investors headed by his father Zoran and himself. It formed about a year ago.

The public meeting is Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Roma Club in Leamington.
