Turbines proposal entered

A fifth application has been submitted to build a wind farm in north Northumberland.
npower renewables ““ the company behind the proposal for the region’s most powerful wind farm at Middlemoor ““ want to build seven turbines on land south west of Grindon, 10km south west of Berwick.
If approved by Berwick Borough Council, the plant would produce enough electricity to meet the average annual needs of between 6,800 and 9,200 homes ““ up to three-quarters of the homes in the Berwick area.
The application follows those for Middlemoor, Moorsyde, Barmoor and Wandylaw.
Project manager Andrew Bower said: “We have seen from the Stern Report that there is now a financial as well as a moral case for tackling the effects of climate change.
“Changing the way we generate our electricity is an important part of the process.
“The wind farm at Toft Hill could offset between 27,400 and 37,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. To put that into perspective, that is the carbon saving equivalent to removing between 8,900 and 12,100 family cars a year from the streets of Berwick.”
He added: “The wind farm would make a valuable contribution in the fight against climate change and to achieving the Northumberland target of installing 212MW of renewable energy capacity by 2010.”
