A plan to build what would be the Westcountry’s biggest-ever wind turbines has taken a step forward.
The project, submitted by London-based firm Coronation Power, is to build four 410ft-high turbines – each two-and-a-half times the height of Nelson’s Column – at Wheelers Cross, close to the site of Devon’s first commercial wind farm at Bradworthy.
The firm is seeking planning permission to put up a wind monitoring mast in the area to test its suitability for electricity-generating turbines.
Torridge planners have been recommended to approve the mast, although opponents of the project claimed that it would be an industrial development that would affect tourism and people’s quality of life.
Parish councils in the area have called for planning permission for the mast to be refused.
Bradworthy parish council said the scheme was for turbines larger than the existing structures at Forestmoor, Bradworthy, which was “unacceptable”.
Nearby West Putford parish council said there were no benefits to the provision of such a structure “other than to increase the likelihood of a further planning application for the surrounding land”.
