Village wind farm plans submitted

Five 110m-tall wind turbines could be built near a County Durham village, if planning permission is approved.
Power company E.ON UK wants to construct the wind farm to the west of Haswell village, near Easington, to provide power for around 7,000 homes.
The £12.5m project would displace more than 28,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, according to the firm.
Easington District Council will consider the planning application, which was submitted on Thursday.
‘Important weapon’
The Haswell turbines would each have a capacity of 2.5 megawatts, according to the company, which owns and operates 20 wind farms across the UK.
Matt Pinfield, project developer for the scheme, said: “We think this is a cracking place for a wind farm but, more importantly, it’ll displace more than 28,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
“That’s why wind farms such as Haswell Moor are an important weapon in the battle against climate change and we’re right at the forefront of that battle with plans to spend £1bn on green generation over the next five years.”
If the application is approved, E.ON UK said it would use local contractors, wherever feasible, in its construction.
