Submissions on Meridian wind farm a record

More than 800 submissions have been received on a planned Central Otago wind farm, with the Department of Conservation submitting an opposing view to the rest of the government.

Submissions closed on Friday afternoon on Meridian’s Project Hayes wind farm which would be one of the largest in the world.

The Government has made a submission in support of the project, but DoC has asked that it be declined at least until Meridian provides it with more information about the effects on the area.

In its submission, DoC says Meridian needs to provide more information about how the wind farm will affect the biodiversity of the area and how it will affect visitors to nearby conservation parks.

The controversial project would mean that 176 wind turbines would be spread over 92 kilometres of mainly tussock land near Middlemarch.

Central Otago District Council says the number of submissions is a record.
