DoC against Meridian wind farm in Central Otago

The Department of Conservation says an application by Meridian Energy to build an 176-turbine wind farm in Central Otago should be declined unless it provides more information about its effect.

Resource consent submissions close on Friday afternoon for the planned Maniototo wind farm which would be one of the world’s largest.

In its submission, DoC says Meridian needs to provide more information about how the wind farm will affect the biodiversity of the area and how it will affect visitors to nearby conservation parks.

Central Otago District Council says more than 300 submissions have been received, with a flurry of last-minute arrivals continuing.
