Approval sought for wind monitor

Planners in north Devon are recommending the go-ahead for a wind monitoring mast.

The 55m (180ft) high temporary structure will monitor the suitability of the site at Wheeler’s Cross for a wind farm.

It there is enough wind, developers Coronation Power want to apply to erect four turbines on the site.

Nearby residents against any turbines say they are concerned the monitor mast will be the first step to a wind farm.

Public inquiries

Coronation Power wants to build turbines up to 125m (410ft) high at the site.

The company said the proposed scheme could generate electricity for about 10,000 homes and would contribute to the county’s renewable energy targets.

But critics are concerned about the impact of any turbines on the landscape, including spoiling views and deterring visitors.

Other wind farm proposals in Devon are currently being considered.

A public inquiry into plans for 22 turbines at Fullabrook Down, near Ilfracombe, starts next week.

And an inquiry into a wind farm at Den Brook, near Spreyton, is under way.
