Wind farm opponents say farms don't need to be coastal

Opponents of a proposed wind farm near the southern Western Australian town of Denmark say plans for a similar wind farm at Mount Barker make a mockery of claims wind farms must be on the coast.

The planned Denmark community wind farm on Wilson Head, near Ocean Beach, has attracted vocal opposition from people who believe it will be a blight on an important coastal landscape.

Plantagenet council last week voted to initiate the rezoning of land for a wind farm a few kilometres north of Mount Barker.

Anti Denmark wind farm campaigner Peter Mortimer says the Mount Barker proposal proves it is feasible to have wind farms away from the coast.

“It shoots down in flames the argument put forward by Planning Minister Alannah MacTiernan that the Denmark wind farm has to be on the coast because it’s a windy site and you can’t move it inland,” he said.

“I mean, here we’ve got the Mount Barker one well inland, 55 kilometres inland, on a windy site and it’s also a site of low visual significance.”
