The Commission for Energy Regulation says a recent decision will treble the contribution of renewable energy, particularly wind, to Ireland’s power needs between now and 2010.
At present, just over 1,000 megawatts of power from renewable energy is connected to the electricity network, which has a total capacity of 6,500mw.
The regulator has approved an additional 1,300mw of renewables, mostly wind, for the system. A further 620mw is at the planning stage and is contracted for connection. This will bring the total for renewables to around 3,000mw by 2010, when the total capacity will be 7,800mw.
The commission says the new connections will involve 121 projects throughout the country.
The Government recently set a target of 30% of Ireland’s electricity generation to be through renewable energy by 2020. The CER says its decision puts us ‘well on the way’ to achieve this.
