Energia, an electricity supplier owned by ISEQ-listed Viridian, has entered into long-term contracts with developers for the construction of 15 new wind farms in Ireland.
The windfarms will have a combined capacity of 165 Megawatts.
The contracts have been entered into as part of the Government’s initiative to increase electricity generated from renewable resources, launched in May this year.
The 15 wind farms are due for completion between 2007 and 2009 and should generate enough power to supply 100,000 homes annually.
The total estimated value of the contracts over their 15-year lives is €550m.
The REFIT programme is part of the Government’s plan to meet its Kyoto obligations.
The 165MW contracted by Energia will save approximately 215,000 tonnes of CO2 and other harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere and is equivalent to taking 50,000 cars off the roads annually.
Energia is already established as a major electricity provider to the business market. The company has a 25% market share of the business electricity market in Ireland.
Energia has offices in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Belfast and Omagh.
