Delighted campaigners are celebrating the ‘people power’ victory which saw controversial windfarm plans for Bilsthorpe and Eakring thrown out.
Developers had wanted to build seven giant turbines at two locations – the former Bilsthorpe Colliery site and Stonish Hill near Eakring.
But after a high-profile campaign backed by hundreds of residents, protestors were finally able to celebrate their triumph when planners rejected the proposals last week – and said the action campaign by residents had helped them reach their decision.
Newark and Sherwood District Council’s decision was immediately welcomed by Shirley Burnett, the vice-chairman of the Eakring Turbine Action Group, who said she was ‘ecstatic’ about the no-go decision.
“It has been 18 months of hard work and a tremendous amount of time, effort and expense,” she told Chad.
“But it has all been worthwhile to keep these turbines away from Eakring and Bilsthorpe. Now we will be watching the developers in case they decide to appeal about the decision.”
Almost 100 protestors – many wearing T-shirts saying ‘No to these Turbines’ – packed into Kelham Hall last Tuesday to see councillors reject the plans.
As well as heated opposition from local residents, planning bosses were also forced to turn down the plans because of opposition from the Ministry of Defence.
