Council thumbs down for wind farm

Councillors have voted to reject plans for a 23-turbine wind farm on a hillside in the Glenkens.

The Stewartry area committee went against the proposal on the grounds of its adverse impact on the landscape.

Planning officials had recommended backing the scheme but local councillors rejected it on a casting vote by chairwoman Patsy Gilroy.

The proposals will now go to the authority’s planning and environment committee for ratification.

Councillors met for several hours in Kirkcudbright town hall before giving their decision.

Final decision

A decision had previously been deferred after a planning application was lodged for another wind farm on a nearby site.

More than 500 objections had been received to the plans with about 80 representations in support of the scheme.

The decision will still have to be approved by the council’s planning and environment committee.

It will then go to the Scottish Executive which will have the final say on whether the plans go ahead.
