A windfarm with three 110 metre turbines could be built next to a village in Castle Morpeth’s rural coalfield under plans drawn up by UK Coal.
A planning application, which aims to redevelop a former coal handling store at Lynemouth, has been submitted to Castle Morpeth Council by Harwood Power Ltd.
Doncaster-based Harwood, UK Coal’s renewable energy subsidiary, plans to root the three masts at the 21 acre site half a kilometre from the village centre.
The turbines are designed to generate electricity for export to the national grid, using an existing substation.
The application is for full planning permission.
Harwood expects the centre to employ two part time engineers, and up to 20 builders during construction.
The site, to be called the Bewick Drift Wind Farm, was picked because of the area’s high winds.
Harwood held a residents’ consultation day in June at Lynemouth Resource Centre.
