Plans to build one of Europe’s largest wind farms in Ayrshire have been dramatically scaled down after protests from the public and conservation groups.
A total of 148 wind turbines had been proposed for Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park in North Ayrshire.
But Australian developers Wind Hydrogen Limited have been forced to reduce that to 24.
Both the park authority and RSPB Scotland had opposed the wind firm, one of nine proposed for the park.
WHL today announced it had redrawn its plans, after public consultation.
The proposed locations for the 24 turbines are now to the west of the original site near Lochwinnoch and Kilbirnie.
Plans for a hydrogen fuel storage plant and hydrogen research and development facility remain intact.
Despite the changes, campaigners condemned the proposals.
Dan Wright of the Ladymoor Wind Farm Action Group said: “This new proposal remains a plan to desecrate what in any other country would be nationally protected.”
A spokesman for the RSPB said: “The scale they’re talking of could still have an impact on the hen harrier population.”
