Shore-wide polling of residents and summer visitors showed Monmouth County beachgoers most inclined to accept offshore wind power turbines and almost half of Ocean County respondents in favor.
Those interviewed in Atlantic County coastal communities were more resistant.
“That’s the one place where people have direct experience with how these things look,” said Tim Dillingham of the American Littoral Society, a Sandy Hook-based environmental group that’s skeptical of proposals for offshore wind power generators.
Skeptics and supporters are drawing different conclusions from the public opinion report, issued Friday by the state Commerce, Economic Development and Tourism Commission. Based on more than 4,000 interviews with beachgoers last summer, the report concluded that on balance there’s support for building offshore turbines by a margin that increases with the distance from shore.
In Monmouth County, 58 percent of respondents overall expressed support for offshore wind turbines, compared to 49 percent in Ocean County. In Atlantic County “¦ where five onshore turbines are spinning at the north end of Atlantic City “¦ 36 percent supported siting turbines offshore, the survey reported.
