New party set for official launch

A new political party in the Scottish Borders is set for its official launch at a public meeting in Galashiels.

Campaigners against major housing plans in the region, wind farms and the extension of the Waverley line have united to form the Borders Party.

They say their aim is to create a new type of local government which is more responsive to community need.

The party intends to field candidates in all 11 of the new multi-member wards at council elections in May.

The Borders Party also hopes to field a candidate for election to the Scottish Parliament.

The party is to be officially launched at the Volunteer Hall in Galashiels on Monday night.
