Logan Township supervisors are slated to vote Nov. 9 on rules for windmills already endorsed by the township planning commission but are being questioned by a company studying potential sites.
If adopted, the township will designate an area on the west side of the municipality – bordered by Route 36 to the north and the Horseshoe Curve to the east – for windmills.
The township will prohibit windmills within 3,000 feet from the center of the railroad bed surrounding the Horseshoe Curve. An earlier version prohibiting windmills within 2,500 feet of the Horseshoe Curve.
The planning commission spent at least five months on the proposal and believes that the area identified for windmills should not be expanded.
Gamesa Energy representatives Terry Nichol and Myron Markovitz asked last month about enlarging the area for windmills as far north as Antis Township.
The commission said no.
The proposed windmill zone also excludes areas under study for windmill locations. Gamesa has conducted tests on the City Authority watershed outside the proposed windmill zone.
If test results are favorable, the company has told the authority that it might consider leasing land to construct and operate windmills. The deal could yield money for the authority and township.
If the ordinance is adopted as proposed, Gamesa would need a variance to build a windmill outside the designated zone.
