Wind power project proposed

PORT CLINTON – A wind-turbine company is trying to get City Council to invest in exploring the possibility of joining an alternative energy experiment with the federal government at Camp Perry.

Representatives of North Coast Wind & Power LLC told council Tuesday night that the U.S. Air Force might install a wind turbine at Camp Perry as a possible source of supplying electricity to the military installation and local municipalities.

The project would cost at least $1.2 million to install a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine on the base, said Tom Williams, North Coast Wind & Power spokesman. Funding sources include federal and state grants. He also suggested that Port Clinton throw an undisclosed share into the project.
Williams said having an alternative power source would give the city greater leverage when the time comes to negotiate utility rates.

“In the long run, it can save money,” he said.

In the meantime, Councilman Jim Hansen suggested that council schedule meetings with AMP-Ohio and FirstEnergy to get their take.
