Keep wind turbines out of county

Wind turbine companies and their corporate promoters are limited liability partnerships owned by oil and power companies. They are nothing but gigantic tax shelters, subsidized by our government, that only accidentally generate even a smidgen of electricity.

Thomas O. Grey states in a recent letter that wind turbines create no pollution, and conveniently neglects to describe the environmental disaster of clear-cutting a mountaintop, ramming through an 80-foot-wide service road, because the turbine parts are unutterably gigantic.

He makes no mention of how many tons of stone, dirt and concrete must be removed, moved in or relocated for the turbines huge foundations, to say nothing of the massive equipment necessary to erect these monstrosities. No mention at all of sun-shadow casting and light strobing effects.

No discussion at all about lightning attraction or stray voltage to ground, two very dangerous side effects, and no suggestion at all of the bald-faced obscenity of five 420-foot tall behemoths in a rural landscape such as Savoy.

Columnist Lauren Stevens, described as an environmentalist, recently wrote that the only consideration concerning wind turbines should be their location.

If one adds the fact that electricity generated by turbines goes into the power grid directly and is not allocated specifically for any one area or town the towers are located in, then logically, wind turbines can be placed anywhere near existing electrical lines and should never be near inhabited areas or neighborhoods like Savoy’s proposed wind turbines.

Our politicians are opposed to wind turbines near Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket because of the eyesore component. Why are the sensibilities of rich vacationers more important than Berkshire County residents? What hypocrisy.
