The perils of turbines

Recent correspondence on wind turbines and birds is brought up to date by an email from the Norwegian Institute for Nature Reserve concerning white-tailed eagles (WTE) on the island of Smola: “In September a new adult WTE was found beneath a turbine at Smola, in a search for corpses. There are now 10 dead WTE found at Smola since August 2005” (dated October 2). All soaring raptor and many large slow-flying bird are at serious risk, having no natural defence against 100mph blade tips.
