Cumbria’s tallest wind turbines have been erected in Workington.
The two turbines, each 108 metres from ground to blade tip, are at the Eastman site, formerly Voridian, next to the A596 Workington to Maryport road.
The turbines will supply about a third of the energy needs of the US-owned factory, which makes cigarette filter material and pellets for plastic bottle production.
They are about twice the height of turbines on the Siddick and Oldside windfarms, opposite the Eastman factory.
Commissioning is expected to take place soon and, after testing, the official hand-over is scheduled for mid-October. An official switch-on ceremony is under discussion.
The turbines will be built by the UK arm of the German company Repower.
Allerdale council’s development panel rejected the plan three years ago but that decision was overturned on appeal by the government’s planning inspectorate.
They were approved despite opposition from Seaton villagers and its parish council, which said the turbines would be an eyesore and devalue property.
