Four University of Wisconsin campuses are taking part in a pilot project to become energy independent by 2012, Gov. Jim Doyle announced Wednesday.
The campuses in Green Bay, Oshkosh, River Falls and Stevens Point will become the first state-owned facilities capable of acquiring or producing sufficient renewable energy to meet their consumption, Doyle said in a release.
The campuses will work with the state’s Department of Administration to identify and replace power from traditional sources with such things as solar and wind power, fuel cells and renewable fuels, the governor’s office said. The project also will emphasize energy conservation to limit demand.
Doyle’s office estimates that by converting the four campuses to renewable fuels, 260,000 tons of coal will be saved over a decade and greenhouse gas emissions will be cut by 676,000 tons.
UW System President Kevin Reilly praised the project, saying it will give faculty, students and staff a chance to find innovative solutions to energy challenges.
The UW project is a step toward the goals Doyle announced in July for the state to use renewable fuels for 25 percent of its electricity and 25 percent of its transportation by 2025.
