Public officials and energy industry representatives joined Lewis County school children and their families to dedicate the Maple Ridge Wind Farm today. The event “Tapping Maple Ridge, Harvesting Wind Energy” celebrated Maple Ridge Wind Farm as New York’s largest electric plant built this year and included the premiere of the 30 minute film “Tapping Maple Ridge. ”
The ceremony included patriotic songs by the Lowville Academy Choir, a demonstration of windmill science projects by a group of Lowville 8th grade students and a ribbon cutting.
The wind farm area includes the towns of Martinsburg, Lowville, Watson, and Harrisburg in Lewis County on the Tug Hill Plateau.
According to Bill Moore, Director of Development of Maple Ridge, the project was named to honor the maple sugaring tradition of Lewis County, the leading maple syrup producing county in the state.
The first phase of Maple ridge produces 231 megawatts of electricity using 140 turbines. When Phase 2 is completed a total of 195 turbines will be producing 320 megawatts, enough to power 160,000 average New York homes.
The Maple Ridge Wind Farm is jointly owned by Portland, OR based PPM Energy and Houston, TX based Horizon Wind Energy.
