The Public Service Commission’s Aug. 28 ruling permitting 124 industrial wind turbines in Greenbrier County drew a quick response from MCRE (Mountain Communities for Responsible Energy).

MCRE spokesman Dave Buhrman said, “We concur with wind opponent Jon Boone who states, “˜Industrial wind is a distraction issue–distracting from the heavy lifting required for meaningful change in our energy practices.'”

He said conservation efforts are preferable to damaging more West Virginia mountain tops to produce energy West Virginia doesn’t need.

“Most of the energy produced in this state is exported to other states, exactly what Beech Ridge Energy intends to do. Economic benefits to the Mountain State will be marginal, but the majority of benefits will be enjoyed outside the state,” the spokesman alleges.

“All the negative impacts will be incurred by West Virginians. MCRE intends to petition the Commission to reconsider, and place the interests of West Virginia over other states and regions.”
