Xcel unveils renewable energy plan in Colorado

DENVER (AP) – Xcel Energy has announced plans for two more wind farms in Colorado to help it comply with a voter-approved initiative requiring it to obtain ten percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2015.

The two wind farms will each produce 200 megawatts, and they’ll join two other previously announced wind farms in Colorado.

The four wind farms would add 775 megawatts of wind energy before the end of 2007.

Amendment 37 was approved by Colorado voters in 2004. It also requires that at least four percent of renewable energy come from solar power. Xcel is reviewing bids on several solar power proposals.

Minneapolis-based Xcel estimates that one megawatt of solar or wind power serves about 330 customers.
