Western Isles Council has issued misleading information surrounding recent opinion polls on giant onshore windfarm proposals, according to opponents.
The Moorlands Without Turbines (MWT) campaign group is angry about two press releases which suggested public opinion on plans for massive development on Lewis is split, with 41% of the community backing the principle of major windfarms and 40% opposing the idea.
The group said the council failed to reveal that the survey also found widespread opposition to two major windparks in the planning process – a Lewis Wind Power proposal for Barvas Moor and Eishken estate owner Nicholas Oppenheim’s hopes for Beinn Mhor Power.
MWT claims that across the isles, there was 47% opposition to the Lewis windfarm and 38% support for it, while 41% opposed the Eishken plan and just 34% backed it. The campaigners say that on rural Lewis where three major windfarms are proposed, opposition was even higher.
A council spokesman said last night: “We reject any suggestion that the press releases were misleading. The information on the poll has been freely available to anyone who wants it.”
