A petition has been launched to oppose a planned windfarm at Brownriggs Hall Farm near Allonby.
Dutch company Nuon Renewables wants to build five 320-feet-high turbines.
Bed and breakfast and gift shop owner Alan Philipson and neighbour Godfrey Newham have launched the petition which is available in the Allonby Paper Shop, Past and Present Gift Shop, the Ship Inn, The Dolphin and Baywatch.
Simon Brooks, operator of the Manor House Caravan Park, which will be only 700 metres away from the wind farm, claimed little notice would be taken of a petition.
He said: “I’ve been told the planning authority does not give much weight to petitions. We need to get people to write letters and if they are handwritten and individual then it would be better still.
“People come to Allonby because we are on the perimeter of what has been described by the government as an area of outstanding natural beauty.”
“Even if the wind farm is placed just outside the boundary of that area, it is still spoiling it.
“Once they are built there is nothing that can be done about the problem. We have to tackle the issue before it is too late.”
Steph Newham, wife of one of the petition organisers, is in favour of windfarms in industrial areas but objects to an “inappropriate” windfarm near Allonby.
Mr Philipson added: “We are trying to develop a tourist industry to keep us going. This could well destroy that plan.”
Nuon Renewables claim the windfarm has the potential to provide electricity for 5,500 homes.
Chris Ranner, Nuon development manager, said: “We have arrived at a final proposal which I am confident is of the scale, size and detailing appropriate to the area and this location.”
Allonby Parish Council and neighbouring Mawbray parish council have turned the proposal down.
The hearing by Allerdale council’s development panel is set for October.
