A TOTAL of 40 people are to lose their jobs at a wind-turbine factory in the West of Scotland, after Danish firm Vestas announced yesterday it was scaling down its operation in Scotland.

An online report by the company confirmed it is to stop production of nacelles – structures on top of the turbine’s tower which house all of the generating components – at the factory at Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula.

The move, which comes as Scottish ministers continue to push for more renewable energy sources, was described as “devastating” by the local Lib Dem MP, George Lyon.

Mr Lyon said he had requested a meeting with Vestas management to discuss the cuts.

“This is a devastating blow. Vestas are a major employer in Kintyre and the effects of this decision will be a major blow to the community,” he said.

Last night, a spokeswoman for the Scottish Executive said it was “disappointing news”.
