[…]The three Democratic candidates for governor debated windmills, smart growth at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station and the need for better marketing of tourist destinations such as Plimoth Plantation when they took part yesterday in a candidates’ forum at Curry College.
[…]Gabrieli and Patrick both expressed support for a proposed wind farm off Nantucket Sound.
Patrick said the project holds the promise of a potentially important and environmentally sound source of energy, and called it “˜”˜a symbol of the kind of economy and innovation we can cultivate and become an alternative energy center here in Massachusetts.”
Gabrieli said he supports increasing the use of wind turbines as an alternative energy source, and praised the town of Hull for its use of two wind turbines to lower electricity prices by 15 percent to 20 percent.
He said Hull was proposing additional windmills to make the town dependent only on alternative energy sources. “˜”˜That’s the kind of enterprise and initiative we need to see more widely in the state,” Gabrieli said.
Reilly said he supports renewable and wind energy in general, but said the project Cape Wind project would spoil the natural habitat of Nantucket Sound.
“˜”˜I’m open to other locations,” Reilly said[…]
